hi all,

I've been doing some research regarding GPS apps for the IPhone. I've read about sendero look around, Navigon, Tom Tom ETC. I am mainly going to be using such an app on the busses, to tell me when I've arrived at a given station and i should get off. I'm curious if anyone knows which app is best for this. I don't necessarily need root guiding information, I just want to be alerted in time to get off.

Any recommendations greatfully received

for that very purpose i usually use Ariadne GPS. its about $3.99 for the GPS app, and it does give very clear location addresses. i asume, you have some sort of idea of the location and the addresses that you might want to get off from a bus, so, it might be an ideal app for you to track as to where you about, instead of having the whole rute selection etc etc.

Ariadne GPS is somewhat responsive. also, for the price, is definitely worth a try.

i haven't have the chance to try Navigon just yet. its about 20 times more expendsive than Ariadne GPS, and if i really need a navigator, i can always use my breaze to navigate.

i believe Ariadne GPS does come with the navigator as well, but the most often i use is the location tracker..., it has the specific name on the app, but it escape my head now. is amazingly accurate too.

either way, if you have any question, feel free to shoot me a pm.

cheers

Here's an interesting app you might want to look at. http://applevis.com/app-directory/utilities/location-alarm
For actual routs I do use both Navigon and Tomtom. Yes they are a bit pricy but much cheeper then anything specificly designed for the blind. Admittedly when I lived in NJ and traveled in NYC Navigon was my choice however for traveling in Saint paul Minnesota I prefer Tomtom because it seems to keep better track of where I am. I'd say if you do want full GPS either will serve you well. The biggest difference I have found is that Navigon gives you the distance before the turn where tomtom just tells you to turn. Have a great day.

I would recommend Ariadne gps as well. It will tell you what streets you are near if you activate the monitor feature. Also, you can use the look around feature to find the streets you are near. If you know specific stops you need to get off at you can ask the driver to tell you when you arrive at the stop, hop off the bus and then program that location as a favorite in Ariadne GPs. Depending on your settings of the app it will alert you at least 3 times when you are near that location again. You can also configure in its settings to alert you via a sound and alert you by vibrating. I have programmed points of interest in this GPS app, and it seems to work very well. I have tested points of interest wile walking, and it is very good at giving me plenty of notice how many feet the point of interest is ahead of me. Also, for simple orientation, there is a spoken compass integrated in the app. Each update of the app provides for great new enhancements and helpful features. I definitely think for the price, it is an app definitely worth getting. Hope this helps. Feel free to post again if you have further questions on this app specifically.
